Death comes from 'The Sandman', a comic book series by Neil Gaiman.
The Sandman was a long running comic released through DC Comics/Vertigo following "The Endless", siblings that are the physical forms of their namesakes; Dream, Death, Destiny, Destruction, Despair, Desire and Delirium.

There was a recent announcement and this years San Diego Comic Con that Gaiman will pen a new Sandman story with J.H.Williams on art duties.
There is also a piece here on deviantArt featuring all of the endless siblings together drawn by Chris Bachalo who was the artist of 'Death: The High Cost of Living' :pointr: [link]
